About the Project
Teran Industries is a global leader in heavy machinery parts, requiring a precise and lightning-fast method for customers to locate specific inventory. As the
Custom React Developer for this project, I was initially commissioned to maintain their existing WordPress platform.
Consequently, I identified a critical bottleneck: their core product finder was a hard-coded PHP/JavaScript script that was neither scalable nor performant for their growing catalog.
The Technical Strategy: From Rigid to Scalable
Managing a large-scale machinery database requires a disciplined approach to data retrieval and state management. First and foremost, I audited the legacy code to understand why the existing filter was failing to scale. In addition to surface-level speed issues, the hard-coded nature of the original script made it nearly impossible for the client to add new product categories without developer intervention.
1. Engineering a Custom React.js Plugin
To achieve a modern user experience, I decided to move away from standard server-side rendering for the filter. Specifically, I developed a custom WordPress plugin powered by React.js that interfaces with a custom PHP backend. As a result, the product finder now benefits from “Virtual DOM” rendering, allowing users to filter through thousands of parts instantly without a single page reload.
2. Backend Optimization & API Logic
Moreover, I refactored the backend PHP logic to ensure the data was delivered in a lightweight JSON format. Furthermore, this new architecture ensures that as Teran Industries expands their inventory, the filter remains just as fast. Therefore, the firm now possesses a scalable asset that can grow alongside their global business operations.
